Industrial wash water, which may contain solids, sludge, mud, hydrocarbon residue (fuels & oils), soaps and water, must be collected from sites in industries such as food processing, agriculture and mining.

This comes from cleaning, rinsing or washing operations, such as car and truck washes and laundries.

This is determined by the trade waste agreement that you need to have in place with your local water board.

Industrial wash water must be collected in pits onsite the following types of sites:

Mechanical workshops
Car washes
Petrol stations, from the car washes areas and the parking apron outside of forecourts
Laundries
Washing operation business

Doing this allows the oily and soapy water, solids and other debris to settle. The wash water must then be collected, transported and treated (the fuel is recycled), before the separated water is finally discharged into the sewer network as ‘trade waste’.

If wash water is discharged directly to a sewer it can affect the health and safety of people and the environment and damage the wastewater system.
